I Went For a Night Duty Yesterday.

When I entered the hospital, I went straight to the unit where I was scheduled to work. After signing in, I saw that my name had been placed on the float list for the ICU. Behold, I entered the elevator and went straight to the third floor.

I got my assignment, received my report, and the work continued.

Later, around midnight, a critically ill patient was admitted and eventually passed away. The deceased was not my patient, but I witnessed the passing of yet another soul. Family members stood crying, and as I watched the scene unfold, I found myself thinking deeply about death.

Indeed, we do not know how, when, or where our own journey will end. But one thing I know is that we will eventually be held accountable.

Accountable for how we spent our lives.

Accountable for how we worshipped our Lord.

Accountable for the good and the bad we engaged in.

Accountable for our time, our money, and even the hidden things we did when no one else was watching.

As I stood there, I kept telling myself:

This is it. This is how it will eventually end. Death!

One day, we will leave this world too. The things we worried about, struggled for, fought over, and sometimes placed above our relationship with Allah will all be left behind.

What will remain is what we did and what we sent ahead.

May Allah assist us in living a good life, guide us to use our time in ways that please Him, forgive our shortcomings, and grant us a good ending.

May Allah grant us Husnul Khatimah—a beautiful ending—and make our meeting with Him a meeting of mercy. Amin.
